I was doing some research on my smart phone when a mysterious word popped up in my search engine which I was forced in investigate. The word was "smexy"!
What does this word mean? Well, it's a composite of two words: "smart" and "sexy". It is used to describe romance novels that are both smart and sexy. I'm talking about stories that incorporate thought-provoking concepts as well as introspection--you know, cerebral stuff that expands the mind and exercises the imagination.
That's what I hope to achieve on behalf of my readers. Romance novels shouldn't keep doing the same thing over and over again. They should step beyond the realm of ordinary anticipation and expectation. They should provide fodder for reflection, revealing and mirroring the complexity of human emotion and behavior. They should startle us out of uniformity and instigate a desire to understand issues and conflicts on deeper levels.
Don't settle for the same-o' same-o'. Your brain deserves a break from the tried-and-true formulaic romance novel. I've read them and reached the point where I knew the storyline on page 1 and how it culminated in the happily-ever-after ending. Except for the sex, they weren't worth reading. And even that got boring.
