I love writing novels! I have found there is so much more to it than describing scenery and sex scenes. One of the many aspects of writing I've found very rewarding so far is research! I have spent days researching material I incorporate in my stories. For instance, in this fifth installment in the Falling Down the Prairie Rabbit Hole Romance Series, I have had to research among many other issues and character accoutrements how someone could do a backflip on the back of a moving horse.
Last night, after studying the physical properties of torque and all the other related mechanics associated with rotational motion, it hit me like Einstein's theory of relativity! I had an instantaneous epiphany. I know now how someone could do backflips on the back of a moving horse. Not that anyone has ever done it... Well, I did see one video of a guy in Europe who did a few as his mount slowly walked around a small arena. But, that was it.
Now, I just need to find a six-foot-four dude who'd be willing to try. In theory, it can be done. Anyway, count on seeing my solution in the fifth novel. It's a prelude to a tragic development, however. No, Will Boone doesn't fall and break his neck. The accomplishment, however, sets off an emotional chain reaction to a later calamity. That has contributed to another research opportunity into PTSD. The condition about which I write is similar, although rare. Maybe even nonexistent as yet, in terms of medical research and peer-reviewed studies.
Each of my stories incorporates a ton of research, from elementary to elaborate. I'm a stickler for realism. And you'll find I'm pretty inventive as well. I create a lot of gadgets along the way, making sure they fit the situation, fulfill a need in the best way possible, and don't already exist. Just a warning to my readers--my novel copywrite protects my ideas as well. Ha, ha. But, to be honest, I have to do it. Will is a genius, so I have to take my own thoughts and ideas up several notches to accommodate his considerable cerebral prowess. It's never a dull moment around him. I frequently find myself thinking, "What would Will do?"
But, hey--I'm learning so much from writing. Thank God for the internet, for Google, for Google Scholar. Writing fiction is a very enjoyable challenge, for this reason. There are more, which we will touch upon later. For now, it's about research.
